Incredible Middle Grade Historical Fiction Books – Non WW2 Edition

There are so many incredible middle grade historical fiction novels that center on World War II, which I absolutely love. But, I wanted to shine some love on some great historical fiction books that highlight some other historical events and eras that merit attention.

In Light and Air, Halle and her mother are sent to a Tuberculosis hospital in 1935 during the TB pandemic.

In Esperanza Rising, during the 1930s depression, Esperanza is forced to leave her wealthy Mexican ranch for a California labor camp.

In Amil and the After, Amil, a Hindu-Muslim boy, must navigate Bombay after the 1947 India partition.

In The Birchbark House, Omakayas, an Ojibwa girl, works with her community through four seasons in 1847 on Lake Superior.

In Across So Many Seas, spanning over 500 years, four generations of Sephardic Jewish girls are forced to flee their homes.

In The Lost Year, Michael learns about Gigi’s experience during the Holodomor, a terrible famine in 1930s Ukraine.

In Inside Out & Back Again, Hà flees South Vietnam in 1975 for Alabama after the Fall of Saigon.

In Will’s Race For Home, Will faces racism while he rides to claim land for his family during the 1889 Oklahoma land rush.
