Book Recommendation: The Teacher of Nomad Land by Daniel Nayeri

Middle grade literature loves World War II, and many of the books written about it are incredible. But The Teacher of Nomad Land stands out among the crowd for its unique and under-represented perspective. That is, what was going on in countries not directly involved in the war, but tremendously affected by it – in this novel, Iran, specifically. In this 2026 Newbery Honor Award Book and 2025 National Book Award winner, we follow orphans, Babak and Sana, as they try to survive in British & Russian occupied Iran. It is a fast-paced survival story that makes complex issues of war, grief, and loss accessible to young readers. It centers empathy, language, and human connection. The Teacher of Nomad Land is a must-read for 8-12 year old readers.

OVERVIEW: Thirteen year old Babak, and his younger sister, Sana, are orphaned when British and Russian forces occupy Iran during World War II to protect their oil interests. Initially the siblings are separated, but Babak promises Sana he will figure out a way for them to be together. After a year apart, Babak and Sana run away and seek the help of the nomads, but all they have to offer is Babak’s services as a teacher. With his blackboard in tow, Babak tries to teach the nomadic children their letters, but it doesn’t go as smoothly as hoped and Babak and Sana are again off on their own.

The two kids set off in the rough terrain of the the mountains, encountering British soldiers, a Nazi, and a Jewish boy who is trying to reunite with his people. The children face immense difficulty, but along the way learn the importance of language, empathy, and kindness. Babak and Sana are also able to show others how language and communication are sometimes the utmost of importance, especially in times of war, and what a necessary tool it is to help mend and avoid conflict.

AGE RECOMMENDATION: I recommend this for readers ranging from 4th grade to 6th grade, or about ages 8-12.

FAVORITE LINE: “That is the teacher’s job – to make the world understandable in parts. No one learns a language all at once. You start with the letters.”

THEMES: communication, courage, survival, education, empathy, kindness.
