Book Review: Mighty Macy by Kwame Alexander

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Macy is in third grade. She loves her family and loves to read and write. She loves the violin too, but not so much the practicing. In this absolutely adorable novel-in-verse by the wonderful Kwame Alexander, Macy’s school library is going to be reducing its hours due to budget cuts. Macy, along with her brother and friends, are devastated and come up with a plan to persuade the Board to reconsider.

This book is perfect for early chapter book readers, or ages 6-9. It is chock full of vivid imagery and figurative language. There are metaphors, similes, onomatopoeia, and so much more. Illustrated by Kitt Thomas, this is a quick, fun, and sweet story drawn from Kwame’s experiences as a parent. It has a great message of standing up for what’s right and having the confidence to us your words and voice to do so.

WHAT I LIKED

  • The sweet and simple message – find your voice and use it for good!
  • All of the vivid imagery and figurative language
  • The approachable text and accompanying illustrations

WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE

  • I can’t come up with anything I didn’t like!

This is a lovely novel-n-verse for all those early chapter book readers out there!
